Biography/History

Steve Dixon Cates taught school in Rutherford County, Tennessee. In 1968 Cates met
Sarah Gertrude Knott when he brought a group of students, the Kittrell 4-H Square Dancers, to
perform at the 31st Annual National Folk Festival in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Cates corresponded
regularly with Knott until her death in 1984. His small group of square dancers evolved into the
Cripple Creek Cloggers, a group of teens and adults who traveled to perform at folk festivals
around the world.
