COLLECTION NOTE

This collection includes information and documentation of the Highway 31-W Folklife Survey conducted by folklorist Dale Johnson throughout the summer and fall of 1999. Sponsored by the Kentucky Arts Council, the West Kentucky Corporation, and Mammoth Cave National Park, the survey was conducted along the U.S. Highway 31-W corridor running from Louisville, Kentucky to the Tennessee state line near Franklin, Kentucky. The survey consisted of three main components. The first was to identify folklife research already conducted along the corridor. The second was to complete a residency at Mammoth Cave National Park for three months, researching the area and assisting in the park’s “Colorfall Festival” in October of 1999. The third and final component was to return to the study of U.S. Highway 31-W and do fieldwork with the knowledge of previous research. The main purposes of the survey were to identify the individuals who were tradition bearers and, more importantly, to identify regional traditions.
